Globalisation is Localisation: BIGO |
Taking your solution global is a pipe dream for many. Uber exited Southeast Asia. Airbnb exited China. Shopee, not Amazon has greater share of the e-commerce market in the Southeast Asia region.
Where they failed, BIGO Technology (BIGO) has succeeded. Since inception in 2014, BIGO has grown by leaps and bounds, with over 30 offices and 6 R&D centres worldwide. It’s one of Singapore’s fastest-growing technology companies that is bringing live streaming from city to city, country to country.
BIGO began with a simple vision: to build a connected world with technology. The goal is to empower a generation of users to learn, share, and showcase on a positive and creative online platform to inspire the lives of one billion people. |
Central to BIGO’s global strategy is the notion that staying local is how you go global.
BIGO adopts a user-centric, personal approach when building their artificial intelligence-backed social platforms. They recognise that the world is very diverse, and they would typically first invest time and walk the ground to understand what matters in a local community before integrating them onto their global platforms.
This approach, coupled with their proprietary AI centric technology led to the creation of their three big apps:
- BIGO Live, a global livestreaming platform. By enabling live broadcasts of talents, interests, and everyday moments, the platform can deliver and build authentic connections among a global audience
- Likee, a short-video platform that is interest based. From lip-syncers to sports enthusiasts, this app connects people through shared interest and can transcend geographical boundaries.
- IMO, a real-time communications platform. This popular app empowers real-time, day-to-day conversations, keeping friends and families connected across borders.
Bringing numerous users from different cultures has many benefits and helps to cultivate a rich and dynamic ecosystem that fosters creativity, diversity, and inclusion in the BIGO community.
Moreover, BIGO is also known for their pay-it-forward culture. Having succeeded at their own global strategy, BIGO is now developing their own incubation project for Singaporean startups seeking to expand into new markets, particularly in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. Through such strategic collaborations and partnerships, BIGO hopes to facilitate promising business opportunities for Singaporean startups in countries like Jordan, where a supportive government and thriving tech ecosystem offer an ideal environment for growth and development.
And on top of all of these, BIGO remains a firm believer in technology. The company continually embraces emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to stay ahead of the curve and to stay relevant to their users.
This is how BIGO is generating their own positive flywheel effect for their continued success and growing ambitions.
